The brief from the company was to reorganise the Engineering Department to make it more efficient and effective in order to improve the time to market for New Product Development.
Bob Bates conducted a review of the roles and responsibilities within the organisation and the skills and competencies needed for the future.
Bob then reorganised the department into a matrix with resource managers responsible for each of the disciplines of Software, Electronics, Mechanical Design, etc. plus Project Managers responsible for delivering each of the major projects. He then identified the key competencies needed by Project Managers and identified the staff that had these competencies and appointed them to the role.
New Product Creation Procedures were then introduced to support the implementation of Project Management across the whole organisation. This resulted in reducing Development lead times by more than 50%.
